1          Visits by Krasnodar Region and USA delegations

On 4 and 5 December 2006 the First Secretary of the Embassy of the USA in Moscow, Kathleen Doherty and a representative of the Corporation for Foreign Private Investment of the USA in Russia, Michele Smith, visited Krasnodar with the aim of determining prospective directions for investment activity of business circles of the USA in Krasnodar Region and to learn about small and medium sized business organisations.

Two years running, in 2006 and 2007, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the USA in the Russian Federation, William Burns, took part in the international investment forum run by the Administration of Krasnodar Region in Sochi.

In March 2006 a delegation from Krasnodar Region led by the Governor, Alexander Tkachev, visited the USA with the aim of studying the experience of construction and management of gaming zones.  During the visit delegates held a range of meetings with owners of a network of casinos and hotels, project designers of gaming zones, producers of slot machines, and managers of the JP Morgan, Spectruv Gaming Group and The Innovation Group consulting companies.

 

2          External trade turnover

Over nine months of 2008 the external trade turnover of Krasnodar Region with the United States of America totalled $80.13 million.  The balance of trade was negative (-$70.58 million).

Exports amounted to $4.78 million, with the main exports being:

timber products ($1.21 million);

food products and raw materials for their production ($0.091 million).

Imports totalled $75.36 million, with the main imports being:

coffee and tea extracts, essences and concentrates ($15.26 million);

sunflower seeds ($4.96 million);

agricultural and gardening machinery ($8.70 million);

machines and mechanisms for harvesting and threshing of agricultural crops ($4.01 million);

chemical products ($4.76 million);

tractors ($5.72 million);

mechanical equipment ($4.12 million).

 

3          American businesses in Krasnodar Region

There are 37 businesses with American capital registered in Krasnodar Region.

The predominant types of activity of commercial organisations with involvement from the USA are trade, production of food stuffs, supply of consumer products, project design, reconstruction, construction and operation of hotels, production and processing of agricultural products, project design and construction of buildings and equipment.

The largest and most effective commercial organisations with American capital, genuinely carrying out agricultural activity are:

Philip Morris Kuban, registered in 1993, the company is situated in Krasnodar and produces and markets tobacco products;

Cargill-Yug, a business with 100% foreign investment, registered in 2000 and engaged in trade;

the Sochi Pepsi-Cola Soft Drinks Factory, registered in 1995, a business in Sochi in Krasnodar Region, and producing and marketing beverages.

 

4          Humanitarian cooperation

Cooperation is also being carried out in the sphere of education: there are programmes in operation for student exchanges and teachers from Kuban universities complete placements in universities and colleges in the USA.

 

5          Twin town links

One indicator of the strong external economic links of Krasnodar Region with the United States of America is participation by both parties in the twin town movement.  Krasnodar has been the twin town of American Tallahassee, and Novorossiisk has been twinned with Gatesville since 1988.  In 1990 Sochi was twinned with Long Beach.
